Breakout: Telling Stories With Data

In this workshop session we’ll use the tools and traditions of storytelling to help us ask good questions of our data, identify plots and subplots, and discard noisy or irrelevant information.

Please respond to this thread if you plan to attend and have specific questions for us to discuss!

In this workshop session we’ll use the tools and traditions of storytelling to help us ask good questions of our data, identify plots and subplots, and discard noisy or irrelevant information. From Kitty’s grandmother’s 1942 diary to the types of data we gather from wearables and apps, we will discuss tools and best practices for telling better stories. Our discussion will include:

  • How can we discover stories in messy or incomplete data?
  • What tools can we use to visualize data, and how does this help us look for meaning?
  • What can we learn from each other through our collective experiences working with personal data?

We will share some of our experiences working with different types of data, and discuss as a group some of our challenges and possible paths forward when we get stuck.
