Research Internship: Design and Data Visualization for Self-Tracking (3-6 months)
Nokia Research Center Palo Alto
(San Francisco Bay Area, CA)

The Context, Content and Community (C3) team at Nokia Research Center in Palo Alto, CA is looking for a highly qualified student to assist in the design and implementation of a self-tracking application based on smartphones. This is a rare opportunity to apply design and data visualization skills to support self-tracking with rich, high-level information (e.g., activities, travel patterns, places) that has been automatically extracted from low-level sensor data (e.g., accelerometer, microphone, GPS, gyroscope). Intelligent processing of sensor data is achieved using C3’s Simple Context, a system for collection, storage, retrieval, and sharing of mobile, social, location, and sensor data. Simple Context has been used by research groups around the world to collect millions of hours of mobile context and sensor data.

A successful candidate for this internship will be a currently-enrolled M.S. or Ph.D. student with excellent coding skills, a demonstrated ability to create compelling web or mobile experiences, and significant experience with data visualization. The project will be adapted to match the intern’s skillset and strengths and will lead to the release of a polished self-tracking app for Windows Phone 7 and Android. A submission to Ubicomp, CHI, MobiSys, or a related conference/workshop is also a possibility.
