I am looking for participants to take part in a research study that explores the difference between automatic and semi-automatic tracking in relation to mobile phone usage. The goal is to explore these concerns and see how we can begin to feel more in control of our mobile usage and start reflecting on our habits.
This study will ask you to fill out very short surveys periodically for ~3 weeks and then submit a final reflection. If you are interested, more details can be found on this landing page: Qualtrics Survey | Qualtrics Experience Management
How are you defining such usage? For example, I went out for a long walk today using my mobile phone firstly using a GPS tracker to record my route, secondly to play a) a podcast and b) some music via Spotify, thirdly to act as a data capture device for my Apple Watch as it recorded GPS location, heart rate, VO2max, step count, duration of my walk (almost 1 hour), plus other heath data, and fourthly as a data capture device for my Ultrahuman Ring Air collecting similar but not identical data items. All the while the iPhone was in the back pocket of my trousers for these concurrent activities.
I only looked at the screen for a few moments in all that time, viz to start and stop the GPS tracker, start the podcast and when that ended to start Spotify. Does that match your definition of mobile phone usage? And does the starting/stopping of the Apple Workout session count as mobile phone usage?
By the way most of the time my iPhone isn’t a phone. Pretty much all of my contacts prefer Apple Messages or WhatsApp for communication as many of them are Deaf.
In terms of the study, yes those would fall under the definition of mobile phone usage. I also have a similar relationship with my iPhone where it isn’t really a “phone” but can be a very useful tool. This experience is what led me to wanting to conduct this study. Please let me know if you have any further questions!
