Apple Watch sleep data are very accurate and comprehensive, but they can also be overly complicated and confusing. Many people struggle to figure out if their deep sleep is sufficient, whether their sleep quality is good, or how to improve it. Plus, basic features like automatic nap detection often don’t work well.

That’s why we created “Sleepal”: a minimalistic app focused on sleep tracking and scientific sleep quality analysis. Our mission is simple - to help you understand your sleep better!

What makes Sleepal special?
• The perfect Apple Watch companion: Get clear, scientific sleep data with AI analysis and CBT-I recommendations. Built on Apple’s sleep algorithms, Sleepal integrates seamlessly with HealthKit without altering your existing data.
• Automatic nap detection: Trained on thousands of hours of nap data, our algorithm can automatically detect naps lasting 15 minutes or longer—better than anything else we’ve tried ourselves!
• Sleep scoring at its best: Using validated scales like the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index and ISI Insomnia Severity Index, our scoring system gives you a single, easy-to-understand metric for your sleep quality. It also includes insights into sleep perception, efficiency, duration, and regularity.
• Daily sleep reports & notifications: Stay consistent with daily reminders to log your sleep. View detailed calendar insights and track your progress with convenient widgets!

How does this improve on the sleep data presentation in the Apple Health app?

I have an UltraHuman Ring Air which collects sleep data and posts it to the Apple Health app. It serves my purposes which is simply getting a good night’s sleep. Since I got my Ring back in October 2024 my sleep quality has improved dramatically. The Ring and its app will occasionally report incorrect data but in general it is adequate for what I want.

One such incorrect momrent was last night when it only recorded a 5 minute wakefull moment that was closer to one hour in reality. I have “learned” that keeping my ringed hand still, for example holding my iPhone while I scroll through social media, is interpreted as sleep.

But as I said in general my sleep has improved without any overly complex presentation other than the similar graphs created in the UltraHuman and Apple Health apps.

I’ve uploaded some images to show how it works - sometimes a picture says it all.

For now, we only support reading data from the Apple Watch, as it’s been shown to be among the most accurate compared to other wearables.

Wishing you a good night’s sleep!
