This Forum Now Requires Permission to Join (But That's Easy To Get)

Hi friends, an update on the spam problem we had last Tuesday. All the bots have been purged. I think the forum is back to functioning normally. However, I have left on the requirement that new members need permission to join. This is as simple as sending me an email at gary@quantifiedself.com.

Since we average less than one new member a day, it’s easy for me to keep up with for now. That should eliminate the bot accounts. Please let me know if you run into any problems.

Unfortunately, the forum was compromised by spammers yesterday. For now new users will have to contact me to ask permission to join. I’m gary@quantifiedself.com.

I’ve been manually deleting all the new users. It was the most efficient way to purge the spam. That means if you try to create an account within the last two days, your account was probably deleted.

QS friend @Dan_Dascalescu, who generously supports the forum, has been contacted, and will probably have a more elegant solution.

For now, MY APOLOGIES for the spam attack getting through. Let me know if you notice problems.

Hi everyone,

I’ve relaxed slightly the registration requirement from Login required - Require authentication to read content on this site, disallow anonymous access. to Must approve users:

All new users must wait for moderator or admin approval before being allowed to log in.

The reason is that with Login required on, the forum was inaccessible even for reading to unregistered users, and also stopped being indexable by search engine and LLM crawlers.

Let’s see how this works going forward.
