Using spirometers to assess your fitness?

Hello fellow self-trackers,

I have been looking into using spirometers for fitness testing and self-tracking. I know they are being used to test for lung diseases (including asthma) and shortness of breath related to other medical conditions, but I was wondering if respiration flow rates could be also used to assess your overall current physical and psychological condition. Sort of like an objective measurement of your energy levels, fitness level, recovery after workout, or even current emotional state. What do you think?
